Example:  Coldplay – Yellow

The Effect

This is an intriguing effect where the singer appears to be moving in slow-motion, but the pitch of his voice and the music pitch/tempo are all correct. The location is very simple (in this case, a beach).

It’s a great effect best used for ballads but could be used for other genres depending on the song and action required in the video.

How it is Achieved

Cameras normally record in 24 or 25 frames per second (in Australia and the UK). What they did here was record the video at double speed (probably 50 frames per second) and have the song playing through a speaker at double speed as well for the singer to mime along.

In the edit suite, the video is slowed back down to 25 frames and synced to the song at normal speed. The end result? Slow-motion video and normal song playback.

In this video, the stars at the beginning were most likely added digitally using motion-tracking software and graded at the end to make the sky appear yellow.

The Police used this effect in their video for Wrapped Around Your Finger

Massive Attack *may* have used this in their excellent track, Unfinished Sympathy. It looks to me like it may have been shot at 30 fps and then reduced to 24 or 25 fps -  the motion has a soft,  dreamy quality to it but it isn’t fully slo-mo..!
